Liquid Diet: Think Before you Drink

Food for Thought: When making food selections, and trying to eat healthy, people are likely to consider the nutrition facts of the food items they are selecting among. But how often do you stop and consider the nutrition facts when perusing a drink menu? Alcoholic beverages can be extremely high in calories, fats and sugars, especially when multiple drinks are consumed.

Consider a night out at Cornerstone watching the Terps basketball team kicking Duke's butt. They are having a special on Corona, $2.00 a bottle and you have 3. That comes out to 444 calories. Considering a 2000 calorie diet, that's almost a quarter of the daily recommended calories.

Consider a Thursday night happy hour at Applebees. You order 2 margaritas. At 243 calories each, that comes out to 486 calories, again almost a quarter of the daily recommended calories considering a 2000 calorie diet.

Calorie counting is less important than calorie quality. Try a low carbohydrate beer like Michelob Ultra - 2.6g carbohydrate. The Yuengling Lager suggested, while it has 135 calories has around 12g of carbohydrates, which equates to 12g of sugar ingestion. Carbohydrates are quickly converted to sugar in your blood. If for some reason you are counting calories, the amount of sugar is what you should be concerned with.

If your insulin response is normal (for a lot of people, this is not the case), your body can process around 9g/carbohyrates an hour before your blood glucose becomes unbalanced. This is when your insulin begins to store triglycerides (fat) in your fat cells. That one Yuengling, while it tastes superior, is already jacking your body (aside from the obvious affects from alcohol on your liver etc).

Just something to think about when you treat all calories as equal - a flawed method of sustaining or losing weight.
